This training course on hospital-based care of severely malnourished children has been developed based on the WHO manual on Management of severe malnutrition: a manual for physicians and other senior health workers (1999). It responds to the urgent need to reduce paediatric deaths related to severe malnutrition in many developing countries and it is intended for health personal working at central and district level, including physicians, nurses and nutritionists.
This training course should be properly combined with a community based approach.

The IMTF and Faculty of Medicine University of Southampton have developed an eLearning course entitled "Caring for Infants and young children with severe malnutrition" based on the WHO recommended guidelines for the management of severe malnutrition. The course aims at providing a standardised and accessible resource that will facilitate the acquisition by health professionals of core competencies in the care and management young children with severe acute malnutrition.

Nutrition emergency training consortium in Burkina Faso, with partnership between the Bioforce Institute, Valid International, Concern Worldwide, Save the Children and Action Contre la Faim. Objective is to develop the skills of a future pool of French speaking nationals originating from West Africa, which may be mobilized at times of nutritional emergency. A 5 month training course is combined with 2 months of theoretical training in Burkina Faso followed by a 3 month field practice. Practical lessons helping practioners understand the key issues around supporting breastfeeding in emergencies.
UCL. Nutrition in emergencies regional training. High quality professional training courses in East Africa, the Middle East, and South East Asia. The Centre for International Health and Development (part of University College London), in collaboration with local universities.
Intensive 6 to 12-day Professional Short Courses in Nutrition in Emergencies have been designed to help equip participants with the expertise needed to lead or support nutrition responses. The course materials are based on the NIE Harmonized Training Package (HTP v2) which has been developed by international experts on behalf of the Global Nutrition Cluster. The HTP is the most up-to-date training resource for emergency nutrition. Each course includes modules on the causes and types of malnutrition as well as the main areas of focus for nutrition professionals in emergency settings:
- Surveys and surveillance Therapeutic and supplementary feeding
- Infant and young child feeding in emergencies General food distributions
- Micronutrient assessment and intervention Monitoring and evaluation
- Humanitarian standards and coordination Emergency preparedness Advocacy

Covers basic concepts around the humanitarian system and reform, undernutrition and response in emergencies, individual assessment and micronutrients. The package aims to increase the accessibility of information within key modules of the Harmonized Training Package: Resource Material for Training on Nutrition in Emergencies (the HTP) to strengthen the technical knowledge of individuals working in or aspiring to work in emergency nutrition. The course comprises 5 sections comprised of lessons and mini-lessons. Each lesson takes approximately 40 minutes to complete and each mini-lesson takes 10–15 minutes. Allow 3½ – 5 hours per section for Section 1–4, and 7 hours to cover all content of Section 5.

The CMAM Toolkit has been designed as a collection of tools needed by programme managers to begin implementation of CMAM programmes, either at the onset of a crisis or during a protracted crisis, as a new emergency nutrition activity. The toolkit was envisioned not as a re-creation of existing tools and resources that are currently available, but as an easy-to-use compilation of these tools and resources.The toolkit is not meant to be used as a replacement of national protocols.
In addition to tools to be used for the start up of CMAM activities, the toolkit contains tools to assist in the integration of Infant & Young Child Feeding in Emergencies (IYCF-E) activities into a CMAM programme. In addition, four new tools have been created to guide the process of 1) Determining the Need for Intervention; 2) Programme Planning; 3) Estimating Caseloads; and 4) Estimating Supplies Needed. FANTA-2 worked with partners to develop a generic Training Guide for Community-Based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM). The first version of the training guide in English was released in November 2008. The guide used admission and discharge criteria that were consistent with international guidance for management and treatment of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) at the time of publication.
